Visit Heusden

Taste the atmosphere of the past

From the Bommelerwaard, it is about 3 hours by boat to get to Heusden. Fortified town Heusden emerged around one of the oldest moated castles in north-western Europe and was one of the first Dutch towns to get a city wall. Thanks to many restorations, much of old Heusden has been preserved, including a few unusual mills. Picturesque streets, centuries-old buildings, studios and galleries, quaint shops and top restaurants create a real holiday feeling. Especially nice is that you can spend the night with the log cabin boat in the middle of the Heusden fortress in the city port, you sail under the footbridge, it’s a bit cramped but it fits. (Always call the harbour master beforehand). Mooring at the quay is easy by using the auxiliary propellers.

Tip: during this stopover, enjoy a nice shower in the port’s shower building, even the way there is beautiful.

If you want to know about activities on that day in Heusden, visit TIP Heusden. A map of Heusden can be found here. From the city port, you can take a city walk past the mill and then have a nice bite to eat at one of the many restaurants. And you never have a long walk back afterwards – the log cabin boat is always nearby!

Get fresh rolls the next morning from artisanal Bakkertje Deeg. For toppings or appetisers for your charcuterie board, delicatessen Hof van Heusden is the place to go. Every Sunday the shops in Heusden are open and the place is bustling. Be sure to treat yourself to an ice cream at ’t IJshuys!
