Animals of the Biesbosch

Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and be as quiet as possible!

Pride of the Biesbosch: the Beaver

Surely the most famous Biesbosch inhabitant is the beaver. Beavers live in small family groups near water. Europe’s largest rodents build their lodges with branches and they are often busy doing so at dusk. Look for gnawed and bare branches somewhere on the bank to spot a beaver. The Bever Hotspot map will help you get started! With the log cabin boat, you can get close to beaver lodges in many places, and if you are quiet then they are happy to show themselves in the dusk.

Other rodents you can find here are the pine marten, hare and root vole

Birds
The Biesbosch is a bird hotspot par excellence. Throughout the year, it is a coming and going of all kinds of species here, including the common kingfisher and the spoonbill. They come here to breed, rest and forage for food.

Spot the impressive bald eagle
The bald eagle is the star of the Biesbosch! The ‘flying door’, as this bird of prey with a wingspan of 2.40 metres is also called, is now a permanent resident of the delta. The osprey, the smaller ‘brother’ of the sea eagle, visits the area only during the summer months. the Eagle Hotspot map shows places where they are regularly seen.
