THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ROUTES

Gorinchem

Historic city of with a modern vibe

From the boarding point in Arkel, you sail to Gorinchem within an hour. You can sail under the Korenbrug into the city as far as the Visbrug. If you dock there in the port , you can immediately head into town for a bite to eat or a walk on the ramparts.

The ramparts and a city gate have remained completely intact in Gorinchem. The ramparts run all the way around and you can walk across them. The specially constructed footpath offers beautiful views over the rivers; unique in the Netherlands! Since recently, you can also stroll below along the east wall. You can then see the high earthen ramparts and outworks in a completely different way. There are two gristmills on the ramparts: De Hoop and Nooit Volmaakt. Mill De Hoop is open to the public every weekend.

The tallest building in the city is the Great Tower; you can see it from afar. If you dare, you can climb the tower. After 256 steps, you will have reached the highest point and be rewarded with spectacular views. In clear weather, you can even see the Dom in Utrecht or the skyline of Rotterdam! Along the way, you’ll get explanations from a tower guide.

You will find an awful lot of nice shops and restaurants in Gorinchem. For a tasty special beer, Pub10 is the place to be! Recommended for dinner: De Hoofdwacht. There used to be several guard posts in the garrison town, but this one, from 1792, was the most important. This central post in the Grote Markt housed the officers and, it seems, Napoleon too during a working visit. These days, you can eat delicious food there.
